42nd Infantry Division Campaign Map

The 42nd Infantry Division’s World War II, known as the Rainbow Division, arrived in France in December 1944 and entered combat in the Alsace sector, where its regiments took over front-line positions near Haguenau and conducted patrols and local attacks through the winter.

In March 1945, the division joined the final Allied offensive into Germany. It attacked through the Hardt Mountains, crossed the German frontier, and moved through the collapsing West Wall defenses before crossing the Rhine at the end of the month. From there, the route moved quickly into southern Germany.

The Rainbow Division fought at Würzburg, reduced resistance around Schweinfurt, and joined the assault on Nuremberg, one of the symbolic centers of the Nazi regime. Driving south, the division crossed the Danube, moved through Munich, and helped liberate Dachau in the war’s final days. Its advance continued into Austria near Salzburg before hostilities ended. The map presents a compressed final campaign, from Alsace’s defensive line to the collapse of Germany and the liberation of Austria.
