65nd Infantry Division Campaign Map

For the 65th Infantry Division, combat began during the final Allied drive into Germany. Arriving in France in January 1945, its route began in the Saarlautern bridgehead, where the division relieved veteran troops and faced the fortified Saar frontier. In March, it crossed the Saar near Menningen, fought through heights south of Merzig, and helped clear Dillingen, Fraulautern, and Saarlautern.

After breaking through the West Wall and capturing Neunkirchen, the division crossed the Rhine at the end of March. Its campaign then became a rapid movement through central and southern Germany, often following or supporting armored advances. The division crossed the Fulda, fought through local resistance, and moved toward Bamberg before turning southeast through Altdorf and Neumarkt.

In late April, the Battle-Axe Division forced the Danube southwest of Regensburg under strong opposition and entered the city soon afterward. From there, its route continued toward the Isar and Inn, with Passau falling in early May. Elements moved into Austria, relieved forces in Linz, reached the Enns, and made contact with Soviet troops as the war ended. The result is a late-war route built around river crossings, rapid movement, and collapsing German defenses.
