75th Infantry Division Campaign Map

December 1944 gave the 75th Infantry Division an immediate winter campaign. Landing in France just as the German Ardennes counteroffensive opened, the division was rushed to the front and took defensive positions along the Ourthe River. It fought around Sadzot, moved to the Salm River, and helped reduce the German salient through January 1945.

The division's route then shifted sharply south to Alsace. In February, it crossed the Colmar Canal, fought through forested ground, entered Colmar, and reached the Rhine during the reduction of the Colmar Pocket. After rehabilitation, the 75th moved north again, taking over positions along the Maas near Roermond and later along the Rhine opposite the Ruhr.

In late March, elements crossed the Rhine in the wake of other attacking divisions. The 75th then advanced through canal lines and industrial approaches toward Dortmund, fighting across the Dortmund-Ems Canal and reaching the Ruhr at Witten. Its campaign ended in the Ruhr sector, where the division shifted to occupation and military government duties.

Across the map, the division appears as a formation repeatedly moved to critical sectors: Ardennes, Alsace, the Rhine, and the Ruhr. At the top right, an overview map of the division's path through Europe is provided. The bottom section contains three vintage maps detailing the most important engagements of the 75th: the Ardennes, the Colmar Pocket and the Ruhr.
