79th Infantry Division Campaign Map

Cherbourg gave the 79th Infantry Division its first major objective in Europe. After landing on Utah Beach, the Cross of Lorraine Division attacked the fortress city's outer defenses in June 1944 and helped capture Fort du Roule before shifting south into the Cotentin fighting. From there, its route moved through La Haye-du-Puits, Laval, and the Seine crossing at Mantes-Gassicourt.

The division then entered eastern France, where the campaign slowed around river lines, forests, and towns. It crossed the Moselle, fought near Luneville, and spent weeks in the Foret de Parroy before moving toward Haguenau and the Lauter. In January 1945, German attacks during Operation Nordwind forced the division into bitter defensive fighting along the Moder River and around Hatten, Rittershoffen, and other Alsace positions.

After the winter battles, the 79th moved north for the Rhine crossing. It crossed the river in March, pushed through canal defenses toward the Ruhr, and helped reduce German resistance around Gelsenkirchen, Kettwig, and the Dortmund area. Viewed across the full route, the division's war moved from Normandy's port battle to Alsace's winter crisis and the final industrial fighting in western Germany.
