84th Infantry Division Campaign Map

This campaign map shows the route of the 84th Infantry Division throughout Europe during World War II. The division fought in the Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe campaigns.

Along the Dutch-German frontier, the 84th Infantry Division's first major task was reducing the Geilenkirchen salient north of Aachen. The Railsplitters attacked in November with British armor support, fought for Prummern, Mahogany Hill, Wurm, and Lindern, and pushed toward the Roer River before the Ardennes crisis changed its route.

Moved quickly to Belgium, the division organized a defensive perimeter near Marche and fought in snow and sleet around Hargimont, Rochefort, Verdenne, and Bourdon. In January 1945, it joined the effort to reduce the Bulge, advancing toward Houffalize, Laroche, and other road centers as the German salient collapsed.

The 84th then returned to the Roer sector. It crossed the river at Linnich in February, advanced through the lower Rhineland, captured Krefeld, and reached the Rhine before holding defensive positions along the river. In April, the division crossed into Germany, forced the Weser, helped capture Hannover, and reached the Elbe. There it held the line and made contact with Soviet forces near the end of the war. Its route moved from frontier fighting to winter emergency and then to the final river line in northern Germany.
