88th Infantry Division Campaign Map

This campaign and operations route map charts the journey of the 88th Division during World War II. The 88th Division arrived at Casablanca, French Morocco in December 1943 then moved to Italy in 1944. After arriving from North Africa, the Blue Devils entered the line near Cassino and the Garigliano River in early 1944. In May, the division joined the drive toward Rome, fighting through Spigno, Santa Maria Infante, and the approaches to the Liri and Amaseno valleys before entering Rome in June.

After a short rest, the campaign moved north into Tuscany. The division fought around Volterra, Palaia, and the Arno River line, then entered the Gothic Line battles in the northern Apennines. Its autumn fighting included difficult actions around Mount Battaglia, Gesso Ridge, Mount Grande, and other heights that guarded the approaches toward the Po Valley.

In April 1945, the 88th joined the final offensive in Italy. It broke forward from mountain positions, crossed the Panaro and Po, captured Verona, moved through Vicenza, crossed the Brenta, and advanced into the Dolomite Alps toward Innsbruck before the German surrender in Italy. Its line of advance carries the viewer through a hard Italian campaign of ridgelines, fortified towns, river crossings, and the final movement into the Alpine north.
