89th Infantry Division Campaign Map

This print is a beautiful and colorful World War II route map of the 89th Infantry Division, known as the Rolling W division. Three and a half months after landing in France, the 89th division came to a halt within a few miles of the Czechoslovakian border in Saxony.

After arriving at Le Havre in March 1945 and moving to the Sauer River area, the Rolling W Division attacked toward the Moselle and crossed in the Bullay-Alf sector. From there, it cleared south toward the Nahe and prepared for the Rhine.

On March 26, the division assaulted across the Rhine in the Wellmich-Oberwesel region under intense fire. Once the bridgehead was expanded, the 89th moved through the Rhine bend, consolidated near Wiesbaden, and then shifted east for the final drive. Its route carried it toward Hersfeld, Eisenach, Friedrichroda, and the Thuringian Forest, which it cleared against scattered but persistent resistance.

By mid-April, the division had crossed the Saale and moved through the Weisse Elster and Weida River areas toward Zwickau. It established and expanded a bridgehead over the Zwick Mulde before being halted in late April.
