91st Infantry Division Campaign Map

This battle and operations route map charts the journey of the 91st Infantry Division during World War II. Elements entered combat in June 1944 near Anzio and Velletri, and the division soon joined the advance north of Rome into some of the campaign's most difficult mountain country. By July, it was fighting toward the Arno River, moving through Chianni, Ponsacco, Livorno, Pisa, and Pontedera.

After holding and training along the Arno, the Powder River Division entered the Gothic Line offensive in September. Its route crossed the Sieve River and moved into hard fighting around Monticelli, Monte Calvi, Futa Pass, Livergnano, and the heights above Highway 65. These battles combined mountain terrain, narrow roads, and prepared German defenses, forcing slow progress through the northern Apennines.

In April 1945, the division returned to the attack during the final Allied offensive in Italy. It advanced up Highway 65, helped open the way toward Bologna, crossed the Po and Adige, and moved northeast toward Treviso and the Venetian plain. The campaign is shaped by their long climb through the Apennines and the sudden acceleration of the pace of the campaign after the German line broke.
