80th Infantry Division Campaign Map

Much of the 80th Infantry Division's World War II route followed Third Army's drive across Europe, but its campaign was repeatedly slowed by river crossings and fortified positions. After landing on Utah Beach in August 1944, the Blue Ridge Division joined operations around Le Mans, Falaise, and Argentan before moving east toward the Meuse and Moselle.

In Lorraine, the division fought to force the Moselle near Toul and defend its bridgehead against counterattacks. The route continued through muddy and heavily defended ground near the Seille, Nied, and Saar, with the division fighting through towns, woods, and river lines before being pulled into the Ardennes fighting. In Luxembourg, it helped contain German attacks near Ettelbruck and Heiderscheid, then crossed the Our and Sauer into the West Wall.

During 1945, the 80th pushed through the Prum and Saar sectors, crossed the Rhine at Oppenheim, and advanced rapidly through Kassel, Gotha, Erfurt, Weimar, and Jena. In the final weeks, it moved south again, crossing the Danube, Isar, and Inn before reaching the Enns as the war ended. The route follows a long Third Army campaign of repeated crossings and hard movement from Normandy to Austria.
